Magnitude 7.1 earthquake rattles Southern California, 2nd major quake in last two days

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, July 5, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Another earthquake has rocked Southern California, this one with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1, based on the U.S. Geological Survey’s measurements.

This was the second quake in two days. Thursday’s quake was a magnitude 6.4, which damaged structures near the epicenter near Ridgecrest, California.

Friday night’s quake rolled through the same area at about 8:20 p.m. (Pacific Time), and jolted residents more than 100 miles away.

Multiple fires and injuries have been reported in the Ridgecrest area and an emergency operations center is being set up in Bakersfield.

Matthew Momberger and his wife, Angela, were having dinner about a block from the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, about 120 miles from Ridgecrest, when Friday night’s quake rumbled through the area.

“We just sort of looked at each other. It was very subtle to begin with, but it soon became clear that it was a significant quake,” Momberger told Gephardt Daily.

“They’re building a new apartment tower near the Staples Center,” he added. “There’s a crane there that was swaying significantly, to the point that everyone was afraid it would fall.”

Momberger said an aftershock from Thursday’s 6.4 earthquake woke him up around 4 a.m. Friday, and “that felt pretty strong” for an aftershock. Friday night’s quake was a great deal stronger than that, he said.

Gephardt Daily is following this developing story and will provide more information as it becomes available.
