PARRIS ISLAND , S.C., March 22 (UPI) — Military officials said they are investigating the death of a 20-year-old Marine recruit who died during boot camp in Parris Island, S.C.
Raheel Siddiqui, of Taylor, Mich., died Friday at the camp, though the cause has not been revealed.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and military authorities at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island are looking into the circumstances of his death.
Siddiqui arrived at the camp March 7 and was assigned to the Recruit Training Regiment, one of about 20,000 new Marines who attend 13 weeks of intensive training annually.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service, a federal law enforcement agency, investigates all non-combat Navy and Marine deaths, Parris Island spokesman Capt. Greg Carroll said.
In 2005, a recruit drowned during a combat water survival test in a Parris Island pool; another died in 2006 after participating in a basic strength examination; and in 2014, Staff Sgt. Hugo Espinoza, 31, a drill instructor, was found dead in base housing, an incident in which no foul play was suspected.
