Aug. 3 (UPI) — Authorities in Maryland determined the death of a Texas woman whose body was found in a hole on the beach was an accident.

The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Wednesday said Ashley O’Connor, 30, of Plano, Texas, ultimately drowned in the sand. Her death was accidental and “caused by asphyxia due to suffocation.”

Ocean City police said O’Connor walked onto the beach alone at about 2 a.m. The office said it wasn’t clear if she fell in the hole or intentionally climbed down into it. Authorities said it’s unclear why the sand caved in around her.

Beachgoers found her body early Monday morning, only one arm uncovered above the sand. She was vacationing in the resort town with her family.
