Driver in Custody After Ramming U.S. Capitol Security Gate

WASHINGTON, July 31 (UPI) — A driver was taken into custody Friday morning after his car rammed a security barricade on the south side of the U.S. Capitol building.

Antonio Pierorazio was the only person inside a dark red Nissan Altima with a Florida license plate when it hit the security barricade. The vehicle did not enter the secure perimeter. No details were given about the driver or the reason for the crash. The roadway in the area was closed for about two hours after the 8:40 a.m. crash.

On April 15, Douglas Hughes, a 61-year-old Florida postal worker, was arrested after he landed a gyrocopter at the U.S. Capitol to protest campaign finance laws. Hughes faces up to 9 1/2 years in prison.

The Capitol, home to the U.S. Congress, is located about three miles from the White House.
