LEFKADA , Greece, Nov. 17 (UPI) — An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale killed two people on the Greek island of Lefkada, authorities said.
The quake struck Monday morning off the coast in the Ionian Sea and at a depth of 3.1 miles (five kilometers), Greece’s National Observatory reported, causing widespread damage to villages on the southwestern side of the island and to their network of roads.
Buildings in Athani, including churches and houses, were severely damaged by the earthquake and by its aftershocks, the largest thus far measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. The village has about 200 residents. Landslides also occurred in the villages of Nydri and Pigadisani.
The area is noted for agriculture and tourism. Seismologists have suggested additional, stronger tremors could follow the earthquake.
