CAIRO, Jan. 9 (UPI) — An Egyptian high court formally rejected an appeal to throw out three-year jail sentences issued to former President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons Saturday.
The elder Mubarak and sons Gamal Mubarak and Alaa Mubarak were each sentenced to three years in prison in May 2015 over corruption charges, although they were later released on credit for time previously held in custody.
It is unclear whether the Mubaraks will serve the upheld sentences due to time already spent in jail, but the former leader, 87, may face additional sentencing in separate charges related to the deaths of protesters during the 2011 Arab Spring.
“The verdict is final and cannot accept any further appeals,” former Court of Appeals Judge Refaat Al-Sayedis said. “Defendants must abide by the verdict, whether imprisonment or fine.”
Mubarak, who was ousted during the Arab Spring from his longstanding position as Egypt’s president, has been under the care of an Egyptian military hospital since his release from jail.
Mubarak spent 30 years in power over Egypt, allegedly embezzling $17.9 million in state funds and putting it toward palace renovations with the help of his sons.
