Dec. 4 (UPI) — Facebook on Monday announced a new messenger app for kids in the United States to safely video chat and message with friends and family.

Messenger Kids — a standalone app — could be installed on a kid’s phone, tablet or computer and still be controlled from a parent’s Facebook account.

The social media site spoke to the National PTA and parenting experts to develop an app where kids can communicate while still giving parents a level of control they want.

“We’ve engaged with over a dozen expert advisors in the areas of child development, online safety, and children’s media and technology who’ve helped inform our approach to building our first app for kids,” the Facebook announcement said.

“Once their account is set up by a parent, kids can start a one-on-one or group video chat with parent-approved contacts. The home screen shows them at a glance who they are approved to talk to, and when those contacts are online.”

Kids will be able to send photos, video or text messages with images, frames, stickers, masks and drawing tools to friends or relatives who can receive the message from the regular Facebook Messenger app.

There will be no ads on the app, as it is compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act.

The app became available to preview download starting Monday.
