AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 23 (UPI) — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles on Friday announced a forthcoming recall of more than a million vehicles — more than 800,000 in the United States — due to a glitch with the automatic transmission that has led to more than 40 injuries, the company said.
The glitch affects models with console-mounted electronic shift levers that make it somewhat difficult for drivers to tell whether the vehicle is in the “park” position by looking at the shifter.
The recall affects 811,000 vehicles in the United States, including certain Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans (model years 2012-14) and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs (2014-15). The recall will include about 52,000 vehicles in Canada, nearly 17,000 in Mexico, and 248,667 elsewhere.
Fiat Chrysler said it will improve warnings and add a transmission-shift safeguard to prevent a vehicle from moving inadvertently.
The voluntary recall comes after federal regulators found that drivers were accidentally leaving their vehicles without putting the transmission into “park.” To date, 41 injuries have been reported due to the problem.
