KALAMAZOO, Mich., June 8 (UPI) — Five cyclists were killed and four others injured when a pickup truck plowed into them on Tuesday, police said.

The driver, an unidentified 50-year-old, was reportedly driving erratically moments before, police said. After hitting the cyclists, all of whom were adults, he allegedly fled the scene. He was arrested shortly afterward.

Five of the cyclists died at the scene. Of the four injured cyclists, one is in serious condition; the condition of the others is not known. Police have not identified the cyclists until family have been notified.

Police had received calls about a man driving erratically in a blue Chevrolet, but had not given chase when the crash occurred, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeffrey Getting said.

Witness Markus Eberhard, who often fishes at the location, was walking out of a local store when another person told him to look out. “The truck went past my foot, almost hit my foot … and before I could tell the bikers to move, it was too late,”Eberhard said. “I already heard a bunch of bikes hit his front end.”
