Six dead, Seven injured in Berkeley Balcony Collapse

BERKELEY, Calif., June 16 (UPI) — Six people died and seven were seriously injured when a fourth-floor balcony collapsed Tuesday at an apartment building near the University of California, Berkeley.

When police arrived after a 12:41 a.m. call, the balcony at 2020 Kittredge St. had disintegrated.

Built in 2006, the apartments are popular with university students and visitors. Google Maps reviewers allude to “a slew of problems” at the “awful” apartment complex, with an average rating of 2.4 out of 5.

Building inspectors and police will be investigating the collapse.

The Irish Defense Ministry on Twitter confirmed that those who died were Irish nationals and posted a telephone number +353 1 418 0200 for those concerned about the victims.

The people in the apartment were celebrating someone’s 21st birthday, Irish news site RTE Ireland reported.

In a statement, Minister Charles Flanagan of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said, “My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the deceased and those who have been injured in this appalling accident. My Department in Dublin stands ready to provide all possible consular assistance to the Irish citizens affected by this tragedy.”
