May 4 (UPI) — Doctors discharged former President George H.W. Bush from a Houston hospital Friday, nearly two weeks after he was admitted for a blood infection, his spokesman said.
The 93-year-old was admitted to the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital on April 22, one day after the funeral for his wife, former first lady Barbara Bush.
“His doctors report he is doing well and is happy to return home,” Bush’s spokesman, Jim McGrath, said.
Barbara Bush died April 17 at age 92.
More than 1,500 friends and family members attended the private funeral at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston to pay their respects April 21. The former president shook the hands of dozens of well-wishers at her viewing the day before the funeral.
Both Bushes had been hospitalized off and on over the past couple years. The former president was hospitalized in January 2017 and again April 2017, both times for pneumonia.
Bush, the oldest living former president — and longest-lived president in U.S. history — has vascular parkinsonism, a form of Parkinson’s disease.
The day before Bush’s release, the Houston hospital announced it named the atrium in its new Walter Tower after the former president and first lady.

“Quite moved by this announcement by [Houston Methodist Hospital],” Bush said Thursday. “The atrium is beautiful, but recent developments notwithstanding I have not taken up residence here. The doctors, nurses and support staff are so nice, but the second I get the green light I’m outta here.”
