OTAY MESA, Calif., Aug. 16 (UPI) — Four people were killed Sunday when two small planes collided in midair not far from downtown San Diego, near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the planes — a twin-engine Sabreliner and a single-engine Cessna 172 — ran into each other at about 11 a.m. local time near Brown Field Municipal Airport in Otay Mesa.
Both planes broke up into pieces, officials said, and were found about a quarter mile apart from each other. Pieces of the wreckage were found in the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.
The California Highway Patrol immediately responded to the crash sites and said debris was everywhere. One plane originated from Brown Field and the other from an airport in El Cajon.
Both planes were attempting to land at Brown Field, the FAA said.
The victims were not immediately identified, but authorities said there were no survivors. It was not initially known which victims were on which plane.
The cause of the accident will be investigated by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.
