Oct. 1 (UPI) — French police have evacuated a Marseille train station after a knife-wielding assailant was shot and killed by soldiers.

Police announced two women were fatally stabbed by the attacker before he was subdued by the gunfire from two patrolling soldiers.

The attack took place at Saint-Charles station at approximately 1:45 p.m. local time.

Gérard Collomb, France’s interior minister, announced on Twitter that he was en route to the scene of the attack.

Authorities said they had opened an investigation of “murders in connection with a terrorist enterprise” and “attempted murder against a person holding public authority.” Officials warned travelers to stay clear of the station while they conduct the investigation.

Witnesses said the attacker yelled “Allahu Akbar” — God is great, in Arabic — as he carried out the attacks.
