Nov. 23 (UPI) — House Republicans issued subpoenas to former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch to appear for closed-door testimony next month.
Comey is scheduled to appear on Dec. 3, while Lynch is scheduled for the next day.
The subpoenas were issued Wednesday but made public on Thursday.
“Happy Thanksgiving. Got a subpoena from House Republicans,” Comey tweeted. “I’m still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions. But I will resist a ‘closed door’ thing because I’ve seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion. Let’s have a hearing and invite everyone to see.”
The Thanksgiving tweet was a reiteration of what Comey said last week about his desire for a public hearing instead of a closed-door hearing.
“House Republicans can ask me anything they want but I want the American people to watch, so let’s have a public hearing,” he wrote on Nov. 16. “Truth is best served by transparency. Let me know when is convenient.”
And Comey’s attorney, David Kelley, said Thursday that his client will fight the subpoena.
“While the authority for congressional subpoenas is broad, it does not cover the right to misuse closed hearings as a political stunt to promote political as opposed to legislative agendas,” Kelley said, according to CNN.
Lynch has not commented publicly about the subpoena.
