BANDUNG, Indonesia, Sept. 21 (UPI) — Flash floods caused landslides in Indonesia’s Garut and Sumedang provinces that killed at least 24 people, officials said.
Heavy rains Tuesday overflowed the Cimanuk River in West Java’s Tarogong district. Aid was sent to the area beginning Tuesday evening, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan said Wednesday.
“A search and rescue team has been searching for victims and found some. We have acted swiftly. What is difficult is to prevent [another disaster]. We hope it would not happen again,” said Heryawan.
At least 1,000 people were rescued and evacuated to nearby military bases, Sutopo Purwo Nughroho, of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said. He added that rescue teams were continuing the search for victims.
