SACRAMENTO, Aug. 13 (UPI) — A man made infamous for his role in the notorious 1971 San Quentin Six prison break attempt was killed Wednesday in a riot at a maximum-security prison.
Hugo Pinell, 71, was among the 11 inmates stabbed Wednesday in the prison yard when some 70 inmates began fighting in the general population yard at California State Prison-Sacramento. Correctional officers used pepper spray and fired at least two warning shots to end the fighting. No officers were injured.
Pinell was serving three life sentences without parole. In 1965, he was convicted of rape with force, in 1971 for killing a corrections officer at a training facility and later the same year for the attempted escape at the San Quentin State Prison. Three corrections officers and three inmates were killed in the attempt. Pinell was convicted of violently assaulting two correctional officers during the escape attempt.
California State Prison-Sacramento, located in Folsom, Calif., houses about 2,300 inmates. This was the fifth riot at the facility in the last four years.
