Pope Francis’ visit to the United States is officially under way.

The pope’s Alitalia jet touched down at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, where he was joined by U.S. President Barack Obama and other U.S. dignitaries.

Also greeting the pope was first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, his wife, Dr. Jill Biden and members of their immediate families.

The arrival marks the start of a six day, three city tour of the U.S., only the fourth time in history that a pope has visited the United States.

Pope Francis’ arrival in the U.S. follows an historic visit to communist Cuba late last week.

The pope will be spending the night at the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See to the United States on Massachusetts Avenue.

On Thursday he’s scheduled to address the U.S Congress.

This is Pope Francis first visit to the United States.

During his stay the 78-year-old pontiff will address crowds in Washington, New York City and Philadelphia.

On Thursday he’s scheduled to address the U.S Congress.

Gephardt Daily will provide continuing coverage of the pope’s visit, including a series of exclusive interviews with former Salt Lake Catholic Bishop John Wester, a man who has met Pope Francis firsthand.
