NEW YORK, July 3 (UPI) — A man suffered a severe leg injury in New York City’s Central Park Sunday morning when he was hit by possible fireworks while climbing a rock.
The injury was bad enough that it may require “possible amputation,” fire officials said. Police and bomb squads were on the scene, Fox News reported.
Connor Golden, 18, was taken by ambulance to nearby Bellevue Hospital. His foot was reportedly severed in the blast.
Golden and two others were walking in the area of the park near Central Park Zoo when the explosion detonated, ABC News reported. Police said it wasn’t yet clear what might have caused it.
Police, however, said the blast may have been caused by fireworks, since Monday is Fourth of July. Law enforcement officials on the scene said fireworks wrappers were found nearby.
A portion of the park was shut down while police investigated the incident, CBS2 reported.
The explosion took place at the park near 60th Street and 5th Avenue.
