Aug. 26 (UPI) — The Belgian army shot and killed a man who attacked soldiers in Brussels with a knife in what authorities are treating as a terrorist act Friday.

Belgium’s federal prosecutor said the attacker injured two soldiers, one on the hand, the other on the head.

The man attacked the soldiers around 8:20 p.m. near the Sainte Catherine neighborhood in the city center. Witnesses said he yelled “Allahu Akbar” just prior to the attack.

A spokesman for the federal prosecutor described the suspect as a “30-year-old man who is not known for terrorist activities,” though the incident is being treated as terrorist in nature.

Soliders fired at the man, who died after being transported to a hospital.

“All our support is with our soldiers,” Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel tweeted. “Our security services remain on alert. We are following the situation closely.”
