Dec. 26 (UPI) — Police in Central California launched a manhunt Wednesday for a suspect who shot and killed a police officer during a traffic stop.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said Newman police officer Ronil Singh, 33, was fatally shot just before 1 a.m. during a traffic stop. Emergency officials transported him to a local hospital where he was declared dead.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. Witnesses saw a gray, extended-cab Dodge Ram pickup truck in the area at the time of the shooting, though police did not say whether the suspect was driving it.
“Our Newman Police family is devastated by the loss of Ronil,” Newman police Chief Randy Richardson said. “If anyone has any information regarding the identity of the suspect, please contact law enforcement immediately so we can get this cop-killer off the streets.”

The Modesto Bee reported Singh was survived by his wife, a 5-month-old son, his parents and a brother.
