April 17 (UPI) — A boy who died when he was crushed between a table and a wall in a revolving Atlanta restaurant has been identified, the county medical examiner said.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner identified the boy on Saturday as Charlie Holt, 5, who visited the Sun Dial restaurant, on the 70th floor of the 73-story Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, on Friday afternoon with his parents. The family is from Charlotte, N.C.
The boy’s head was caught between a table and the moving wall of windows, a space of only four or five inches, after he wandered about five feet away from his parents’ table. He sustained a head injury and was unconscious when he was removed from the restaurant, and died later in Atlanta’s Grady Hospital.
“The amount of people [in the restaurant] who were helping was amazing,” said Atlanta Police Department spokesman Warren Pickard. “They were moving furniture, they were pulling out chairs, chairs that were bolted to the floor. They were pulling them up to get the child out.”
Pickard added the revolving restaurant has a motion sensor to detect caught objects, and the floor stopped rotating as it was designed to do. The restaurant was closed throughout the remainder of the weekend.
