WASHINGTON, July 2 (UPI) — The United States will welcome more than 7,000 new citizens at dozens of naturalization ceremonies across the country during the Independence Day weekend, officials said.
Naturalized citizens must pass a 100-question civics test, prove proficiency in the English language and pass an FBI background check and in-person interview.
“As we celebrate the birth of our country on July 4th, more than 7,000 new Americans will also celebrate the fulfillment of their dreams of citizenship,” said U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Leon Rodriguez. “These new Americans will strengthen the fabric of our nation with their contributions to American society and prosperity, and be able to enjoy all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship.”
Rodriguez said more than 100 naturalization ceremonies are planned across the country between June 30 and July 4.
At a ceremony at the New York Public Library on Friday, 225 people form 55 countries took the Oath of Allegiance, the library said on its Facebook page.
In order to qualify to become a naturalized citizen, individuals must live in the country for three years if married to an American or five years if single prior to applying.
Among the 7,000 new U.S. citizens is the Italian-born fashion model, Fabio, People magazine reported.
