LONDON, Aug. 14 (Danielle Haynes) — What’s being billed as the most expensive bottle of cognac in the world — a Massougnes from 1805 — has been put on the market by a British company for $231,220.
Brandyclassics, which specializes in selling high-end vintage brandies, is selling the 210-year-old bottle of booze after owning it for 15 years. The company’s websitedescribes the cognac as having “a light hazelnut flavor with many complexities of nutty flavors combined with straw and grassy flavors and an array of herby and woody tones all mixed in with a lightness and freshness of the period.”
“We work quite a lot with luxury hotels and in our experience most of these cognacs are sold to customers who would seek to consume them rather than keep them,” David Baker, managing director of Brandyclassics, said in an email to CNBC. “In the U.K. we have sold cognacs of this nature to luxury hotels who would serve them to their customers for up to [$9,387] per measure.
“We know of one case where a customer purchased, during the course of an evening, more than a bottle and his bar bill came to more than [$134,547]. There are many people who seek total exclusivity when they buy drinks and this is one way such exclusivity can be bought.”
