RIO DE JANEIRO, June 30 (UPI) — Mutilated human body parts were discovered Wednesday on the shore in front of the Rio Olympic beach volleyball site on Copacabana beach.

A beach goer found a dismembered foot and another body part which has not been identified, according to Military Police officer Andre Luiz. Police believe they are a woman or young adult’s body parts.

Information about the person’s death are unknown.

The incident is the latest embarrassment to the country hosting the Summer Olympics in 38 days. Financial and policing problems, Zika virus, and threats to the Olympic torch have beset the country for months.

The discovery came after several days of lethal gun battles in Rio de Janeiro’s slums as law enforcement tries to capture a Brazilian drug trafficker who escaped a hospital.

Over the past nine days, at least 10 people have been killed and as many as 50 schools locked down as the search goes on.
