New Bridge Between Canada and United States to Be Named
The new public bridge between Detroit, Mich., and Windsor, Ontario, will be named in the event attended by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Michigan’s Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.
Canada is paying for Michigan’s $550 million share of the bridge after the Michigan’s legislature did not approve of funding. Michigan will repay through tolling on the bridge.
A land acquisition in southwest Detroit is still pending.
Canada will also finance a $250 million U.S. customs plaza in southwest Detroit after Gov. Snyder’s long-running attempt to request funding from the White House and Congress failed. The customs plaza was announced in February, clearing the way for the new international bridge to come to fruition.
