AYREVILLE, N.J., March 21 (UPI) — Police said an off-duty Sayreville, N.J., police officer was found shot to death in his personal car Monday.

The unidentified officer was a nine-year veteran of the Sayreville Police Department and worked in an undercover capacity.

He was found in his car at 7:15 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of a former movie theater near the Garden State Parkway in Sayreville, a suburb of New York City, with a shattered window on the passenger side of the vehicle.

The victim may have been investigating a report of a suspicious person when he was shot, law enforcement sources told WNBC-TV, New York.

“We have been alerted to a report of a body located near the former movie theater in Sayreville. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating with the cooperation of the Sayreville Police Department,” the Middlesex County, N.J., Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
