LEXINGTON, Ky., Oct. 16 (UPI) — The 15-year-old daughter of Olympic runner Tyson Gay died after a shooting at a Lexington restaurant early Sunday morning.

Trinity Gay, a sophomore on her high school track team, died from her injuries at 4:41 a.m. Sunday, the Fayette County coroner said.

Gay was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital with a gunshot wound to her neck.

Lexington police say shots were fired at Cookout Restaurant before 4 a.m. Sunday. Two people exchanged gunfire and drive away, police said.

Two people are being questioned as persons of interest in the case because their car matched the description of one of the cars, a gray Dodge Charger. The other car was a dark-colored sports car.

At around 2 a.m., Trinity Gay made a reference to Cook Out on her Twitter account, and also Tweeted “Of course they start shootin”.

Tyson Gay, 34, competed in the last three Summer Olympics, including a silver medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the London Games in 2012. But the medal was stripped after Gay tested positive for steroids in 2013. In 2016, he helped the U.S. to cross the finish line third in the 4x100m but they were disqualified because leadoff man Mike Rodgers handed off too soon to second-leg Justin Gatlin.

“She didn’t make it,” Tyson Gay told Lex18 in Lexington. “I’m so confused. She was just here last week for fall break [Clermont, a suburban of Orlando, Fla.] It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened.”

Trinity Gay, sprinter at Lafayette High School, finished fourth in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 meters at the state Class 3A high school track meet in May. She also ran on a 4×200 relay team that finished fourth.

At the school, her father holds the state record in the 100 in 2001.

Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett tweetedthat he was “Shocked to hear the news. ” life of such potential cut so tragically short. Sympathies to Tyson and entire family.”
