RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 23 (UPI) — An overturned truck, carrying 2,600 piglets, snarled traffic on the Raleigh Beltline in Raleigh, N.C.
The piglets, each about 3 weeks old, were on their way from Johnson County, N.C., to Iowa on Tuesday morning when a vehicle changed lanes and struck the truck transporting them on the city’s I-440 beltway.
The truck then traveled down an embankment and overturned. Squealing piglets were turned loose in morning traffic, and officials said only about 15 percent of the animals survived.
The drivers of the vehicles involved were not injured.
The accident closed two lanes of the I-40 highway. It took two hours to bring the truck upright, as workers attempted to round up surviving piglets and transfer them to a another vehicle.
The official report of the incident said the estimated cost of the damage was $90,000.
