STUTTGART, Germany, Dec. 5 (UPI) — Luxury carmaker Porsche announced it will begin production by the end of the decade on an all-electric sports car that will travel 310 miles on a single charge.

The Mission E vehicle looks like a futuristic version of Porsche’s iconic 911, but with four doors. It will have a power output of more than 440 kilowatts, equivalent to 600 horsepower, and will go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) in “under 3.5 seconds,” the company said. It will be equipped with quick charging that will enable an 80 percent charge in about 15 minutes.

The Mission E is part of a larger push by parent company Volkswagen to begin production on electric and hybrid vehicles. The group plans to introduce 20 such vehicles by 2020. Porsche has not announced the price of the Mission E.

It is unclear what role the Volkswagen diesel scandal will play in the overall plans for the Mission E, but Volkswagen sales have plummeted as a result.

The company admitted in September a number of its diesel-fueled vehicles are equipped with the software that emits lower volumes of nitrogen oxides during emissions testing than during regular driving. The company faces up to a $37,500 Clear Air Act fine for each faulty vehicle in the United States and is responsible for repairing the problem.
