Portland police arrest driver who struck 6 people

Jan. 26 (UPI) — Police officers in Oregon have arrested a motorist accused of striking at least six people, including one fatally, with his car over a span of dozens of Portland city blocks, authorities said.

Portland Fire and Rescue said Monday that six pedestrians were struck by the car, including two adults who sustained minor injuries, and one adult who was transported to the hospital in critical condition and later died.

The Portland Police Bureau said in a statement it was notified of a hit and run at about 1 p.m., and as officers were responding, other calls of pedestrians being hit by a car came in.

The suspect was arrested after crashing the vehicle and was restrained by witnesses while attempting to flee the scene on foot, police said.

“We do have information that he was in the street and up on sidewalks, but it’s very preliminary right now for me to go any further about what he was doing, what his intentions were,” Portland Police Officer Derek Carmon told reporters during a press briefing.

The identity of the suspect, who was being processed, was not released.

“The crime scene is very large and spans dozens of city blocks,” the statement said. “Investigators from the Traffic Division and detectives are on scene to assist with the investigation.”
