South Carolina Firefighter Dies

CONWAY , S.C., March 21 (UPI) — A Conway, S.C., firefighter died after falling from a fire truck at the scene of a house fire, the Horry County, S.C., coroner confirmed.

Christopher Ray, a six-year veteran of the City of Conway Fire Department, fell from the back of the truck after it responded to the fire Sunday afternoon. He was then struck by the truck as it traveled in reverse.

Ray was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred in the early stages of fighting the fire, Battalion Chief Brian Van Aernem said. Firefighters were visibly upset as they battled the fire. The house was declared a total loss.

Officials scheduled an autopsy for Monday. The South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the incident.

Ray is survived by his wife and two daughters.
