HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 13 (UPI) — At least three people are dead and dozens are injured after strong winds in Pennsylvania contributed to a fatal multi-vehicle pileup on Interstate 78 Saturday morning.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency was activated and set up shelter near the scene as medical helicopters arrived on the scene to transport critically injured victims.

According to NBC News state police said “over 50” vehicles were involved in the pileup, including a bus transporting members of the Penn State basketball team.

Winds up to 30 mph were reported at the time of the crash. The National Weather Service had issued alerts about snow squalls in the area.

Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency spokesman Cory Angel said officials were investigating whether the drifting snow played a factor in the crash.
