AL-KHALIS, Iraq, July 25 (UPI) — A suicide bomb explosion killed at least 18 people and injured at least 23 Monday in Diyala province, Iraq, home of a major Shiite shrine, security sources said.

An explosives-laden vehicle was detonated in the town of al-Khalis, nine miles from the provincial capital of Baquba. The bomb went off amid vehicles awaiting an inspection at a security checkpoint, police Lt. Mahmoud al-Dalwi told state-run Turkish news agency Anadalu. He added the blast damaged nearby cars and buildings.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, which came the day after a suicide bomber, targeted Baghdad’s largely Shiite neighborhood of Kadhimiya, killing at least 21 people and injuring at least 35. The Islamic State took responsibility for Sunday’s explosion.
