Jan. 1 (UPI) — A 16-year-old boy was arrested in the killing of four people, including three members of his family, at their home in southern New Jersey on New Year’s Eve, authorities said.

The unnamed suspect will be charged as an adult after his parents — Steven, 44, and Linda Kologi, 42 — his 18-year-old sister, Brittany, and a 70-year-old family friend were found dead inside the family’s Long Branch home on the Jersey Shore late Sunday, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspect’s brother and grandfather were uninjured in the attack, the prosecutor’s office said.

“Thankfully, it was uneventful,” prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni told reporters about the teen’s arrest. “It didn’t require any force.”

Police said they recovered a semi-automatic rifle at the scene, which they believed was used in the killings.

“The weapon was legally owned and registered to a family member,” Gramiccioni said.

The prosecutor’s office posted on Twitter after 2 a.m. that there was “no threat to the public as it is believed to be an isolated domestic incident.”
