WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 (UPI) — President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama planted vegetables with students at Leckie Elementary School in Washington, D.C., to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Corporation for National and Community Service encourages Americans to honor the holiday by volunteering. The Obamas spent Monday afternoon at Leckie, a school with a high number of children in military families. They were joined by White House mentees and Americorps members.
In addition to planting garden beds as part of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, the Obamas helped pack bags with books for children in need — including Dr. Seuss’ “Oh the Things You Can Do that are Good for You!”
