CHUNKY, Miss., Nov. 1 (UPI) — Three people are dead and several were injured after a truck rear-ended a trailer with adults and children being pulled in a hayride in Mississippi.

One adult and two children died and an unknown number of people were hurt after a Ford F-150 pickup truck hit a trailer of Halloween revelers being pulled by a Jeep in Chunky, Mississippi., on Monday night, according to officials there.

Both vehicles were traveling westbound on Highway 80 before 8 p.m., when the truck hit the back of the trailer. Police have not said how many people were on the hayride before the accident, nor have they confirmed exactly how many people were hurt.

At least three helicopters were seen landing near the accident to transport what media outlets reported were at least four people being airlifted to hospitals. The Newton County Coroner later confirmed one adult and two children died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

“It’s a small community,” said Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Andy West. “This is a bad thing to happen anywhere, but when it’s local, it really hits home. These are good people, and our hearts go out to them.”
