April 3 (UPI) — President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that though he’s been “tough” on Russia, having a good relationship with the country would be a “great thing,” as he met with the leaders of three Baltic countries Tuesday.

Trump, Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite met for a working luncheon in the morning before holding a joint news conference later in the day.

The Baltic leaders indicated they were worried about Russia’s influence across the region and sought more U.S. assistance for NATO.

“Getting along with Russia is a good thing, not a bad thing,” Trump said during the luncheon. “Now maybe we will and maybe we won’t. Probably nobody’s been tougher on Russia than Donald Trump.”

He reiterated his desire to have a good relationship with Moscow when asked about a future meeting with President Vladimir Putin during the news conference.

“Well I think we’ll be able to have real dialogue,” Trump said. “Getting along with Russia is a good thing. Getting along with China is a good thing.”
