May 11 (UPI) — President Donald Trump on Thursday established a new federal commission with the goal of targeting problems in voting systems across the United States.

Trump set up the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity with an executive order Thursday, appointing Vice President Mike Pence to lead the effort.

Among its duties, the commission will research “improper” voter registration procedures, systemic vulnerabilities and voting irregularities.

“The Commission shall … study the registration and voting processes used in Federal elections,” the order states. “[It] shall be solely advisory and shall submit a report to the President that identifies … laws, rules, policies, activities, strategies, and practices that enhance the American people’s confidence in the integrity of the voting processes used in Federal elections.”

Trump’s order says “improper voter registration” applies to any scenario where a person ineligible to vote becomes an eligible voter in a particular jurisdiction.

The order also targets laws and rules that undermine Americans’ confidence in the voting process.

The issue of voter fraud has been batted around by both Republicans and Democrats in recent months. Since his election victory, Trump has said multiple times that “millions” of undocumented immigrants voted in November’s election.

Before the vote, Trump claimed the electoral system was “rigged” against him and suggested he might challenge the results if he lost.

The new commission will spend months investigating the voting system and ultimately submit a report to Trump.
