FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md., Oct. 14 (UPI) — Two Airmen were killed in a helicopter crash in Kabul on Sunday, in addition to three NATO staff, including two British military personnel. Five others were injured.
The Airmen were Maj. Phyllis Pelky and Master Sgt. Gregory T. Kuhse. They were killed in a non-combat accident while supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, as Afghan and Coalition forces remain on the hunt for insurgent activity.
Maj. Pelky served as an aide for U.S. Air Force Academy superintendent, Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson. Master Sgt. Kuhse was assigned to the 3rd Manpower Requirements Squadron operating out of Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.
“We are grieving a deeply felt loss today,” Johnson said in a statement. “Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Major Pelky and all those affected by this tragedy.”
The crash is still under investigation. A British Puma Mk 2 helicopter crashed while attempting to land at the Kabul headquarters during their mission known as “Resolute Support.” The incident occurred the same day a bomb detonated next to a NATO convoy in a residential area. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for that attack.
