Update: Trump takes Ohio, Clinton claims Virginia and Colorado

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (UPI) — Donald Trump will win Ohio and Hillary Clinton will win Virginia and Colorado, the first two battleground states to be called in the 2016 election, according to projections by UPI and CVoter.

In winning Ohio, Trump captures a state that has long been at the heart of the Republican path to the White House. In fact, no Republican has ever won the presidency without its 18 electoral votes.

For Clinton, Virginia and Colorado were states she had led for months, though it remained a tight race in each. They add a combined 22 electoral votes to her total.

Every other battleground state remains too close to call.

With polls now closed in the West Coast and Hawaii, Clinton has pulled into a lead in the electoral college for the time being.

Clinton’s Electoral College lead stands at 209-185. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

The remaining as-yet uncalled battleground states include Florida, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan and Nevada, meaning both candidates have a viable path to the presidency.

Elsewhere, Republicans have already retained their majority in the House of Representatives and control of the Senate rests on five races that are also too close to call. Democrats must win four of them to retake an outright majority in the chamber.
