TORREON, Mexico, April 9 (UPI) — A woman suspected of orchestrating the slaying of a prominent Dallas dentist who was dating her ex-boyfriend, was arrested by authorities in Mexico on Friday.

The FBI confirmed Brenda Delgado, 33, was captured two days after she was placed on the 10 Most Wanted fugitives list.

Interpol Mexico said Delgado was arrested in the small town of Torreón and was being transported to Mexico City.

“The FBI is extremely appreciative of our law enforcement partners in Mexico, as well as our local, state, and federal partners, for their tremendous cooperation and collaboration in the capture of Top Ten Fugitive Brenda Delgado,” Thomas M. Class Sr. of the FBI’s Dallas Field Office said.

Delgado, a dental hygiene student, fled to Mexico after allegedly hired two men to kill her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend, Dr. Kendra Hatcher.

She was indicted on capital murder charges and wanted by the FBI after leaving the country to avoid prosecution.

Mexican Consul General Sergio Hayakawa has said in keeping with the country’s stance on the death penalty, Delgado will not be granted back to the United States unless prosecutors don’t seek a death sentence.

“Because our constitution doesn’t have the capital murder or death penalty, our government asks for the U.S. government put in writing that they are not looking for the death penalty,” he said.

Dallas County District Attorney Susan Hawk told CNN that Dallas authorities are still seeking extradition by offering a life in prison instead.

“We’re trying to get her extradited back here,” she said. “In order for us to do that, one of the conditions was the death penalty had to be off the table. She’s still charged with capital murder, which carries a life sentence.”
