Johnson was one of three men shot around 4 a.m. several blocks north of The Florida Mall.
The NY Daily News reported he is expected to recover. The fatal victim was identified as 28-year-old Dreekins Oricko Johnson. The third victim, Reggie Johnson, 29, was in stable condition, according to police. It was not immediately clear if the victims were related.
Orlando TV station WESH, reported investigators said the three men were stopped at a traffic signal when another vehicle drove up and its occupants fired into the Jeep Cherokee.
No one has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.
Johnson is a member of the New York Jets, but the team declined his 2015 option in February and he will become a free agent on Tuesday.
Earlier this offseason, Johnson was arrested in Orlando for openly carrying firearms. Police said the running back had two guns in his vehicle when he was arrested in January, and Johnson received a second-degree misdemeanor charge of openly carrying.
Johnson’s one season with the Jets was a disappointment: He rushed for 663 yards with one rushing and one receiving touchdown after six strong seasons with the Tennessee Titans.
