The Point Of I-15 Construction

Point ProjectMajor construction for the Point Project on I-15 on March 1, 2015.  Preliminary work outside of I-15 mainline is ongoing at the 14600 south interchange and along the frontage roads to I-15.

The construction is intended to improve the movement of people, goods and services through Utah and Salt Lake counties and to replace aging infrastructure. (UDOT), Traffic data shows that if no improvements are made by 2020, the stretches of I-15 between 12300 South in Draper and the S.R. 92/Timpanogas Highway interchange will experience significant delays due to stop-and-go traffic. “This is one of the original stretches of I-15 that goes back to the 1960’s, so it’s 50-plus years old,” said John Gleason, the spokesman for the UDOT told Gephardt Daily. “This is the most critical section that needs to be improved.”

Crews will begin work on the East Jordan Canal, which crosses under I-15 between Bangerter Highway and the 14600 South interchange. “We’re going to expand I-15 to six lanes in each direction,” Gleason said. “We always prioritize our critical needs, those roads that need to be addressed right away, to determine what to tackle first.”

During the construction period, work hours will be 10 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at which time I-15 will be restricted to two lanes, except between midnight and 4:30 a.m., when it will consist of just one lane. The double white lines will be changed to regular striped lane markings as soon as weather permits, but until re-striping takes place, drivers must access the Express Lane at the designated areas with dashed lines and not cross double white lines.

Gleason said that the project will be a big improvement for this stretch of highway. “We’re doing this in the hope that that this will allow I-15 traffic to continue to flow smoothly for the next several decades,”he said. The estimated date of completion for the project is some time in the fall of 2016.
