The Simpsons co-creator died at his Los Angeles home surrounded by his family and beloved dog, according to TMZ. Simon was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer in 2012, and donated his $100 million fortune to charity in the months leading up to his death.

“Rest in peace and thank you for The Simpsons, Sam Simon,” Simpsons voice actor Hank Azaria tweeted Monday.

“It is with much sadness that we must let you know that Sam Simon has passed over,” The Sam Simon Foundation added on Facebook. “We all miss him, and in his honor, we will continue bringing his vision to light through our work at The Sam Simon Foundation. We take comfort in knowing how many greetings he is receiving across that Rainbow Bridge. We love you Sam!”

Simon developed The Simpsons in the late 1980s with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, whom he previously collaborated with on The Tracey Ullman Show. He was also a noted animal lover and philanthropist who created The Sam Simon Foundation in 2002 to rescue and train stray dogs.
