SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 6, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Former University of Utah gymnast Kari Lee and her family lost their Arizona home and pets Thursday in a barbecue fire.

“Our hearts go out to Kari during this difficult time,” Utah Gymnastics said on social media Saturday.

Officials say the fire at the Peoria-area home started about 9:30 a.m. on the Fourth of July when a barbecue malfunctioned and flames spread to the home, according to AZ Family.

One person was taken to a hospital to be treated for their injuries. Five dogs also are believed to have died in the fire.

“They lost everything they owned in the house along with their 5 dogs,” a GoFundMe account for the Lee family says. “With the house totally gutted and a complete loss, we are trying to help them recover and rebuild from this life changing event.”

Lee was a three-time All-American and six-time All-Pac-12 Conference selection during her time at Utah (2015-19).
