CLEVELAND, Oct. 23 (UPI) — Pro quarterback Johnny Manziel could be placed on paid administrative leave by the National Football League as it investigates an incident that may have violated the league’s code of conduct.

Manziel was questioned by police on Oct. 12 after witnesses reported that he argued with his girlfriend while driving a vehicle, stating they saw him grabbing her by the neck. An incident that reportedly culminated with the woman attempting to jump from the vehicle while it was still traveling on the freeway.

A newly released dash cam video shows the girlfriend admitting he has hit her on more than one occasion and telling officers she was afraid for her life.

Manziel reportedly told police that he and his girlfriend had been drinking earlier in the day, but neither was drunk at the time of the incident, ESPN reported. Neither the Cleveland Browns star or his girlfriend were arrested or charged with any crime.

Although the Heisman Trophy winner does not face legal charges, the NFL is investigating the matter to see if he violated its personal conduct policy.

Under NFL bylaws, the league can suspend any player it believes violated the policy — which could mean Manziel gets placed on paid leave.

The league’s policy says a player is in violation if they commit or threaten physical violence against another person — or if a player engages in conduct that endangers another person.

Manziel, however, still played in Sunday’s game against St. Louis.

Manziel’s girlfriend had reportedly told police that the former Texas A&M star hit her and pushed her head into a window during the argument — although she later stated on social media that the pair’s relationship was fine, ESPN’s report said.

If the NFL determines that Manziel violated the policy, it could level a fine, a suspension or it could banish him from the league — although that is typically only reserved for the most serious offenses.
