Murray is playing his first tennis since losing to the great Novak Djokovic in the Miami final earlier this month and getting married to Kim Sears two weeks ago.

The 27-year-old Brit has never appeared in an ATP clay-court final.

Murray’s quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be ninth-seeded Czech slugger Lukas Rosol, who handled Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 7-5, 6-2 on Day 4.

An upset came when promising Austrian Dominic Thiem dismissed eighth-seeded fiery Italian Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-0. Fognini was last year’s Munich runner-up to Slovak Martin Klizan.

Up next for Thiem will be Austrian qualifier Gerald Melzer, who was leading last week’s Barcelona runner-up Pablo Andujar 4-1 in the first set when the Spaniard retired after 27 minutes of play.

The other quarterfinals will pit third-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut against Dominican Victor Estrella Burgos and fourth-seeded Belgian David Goffin versus fifth-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber, who titled here in 2007 and 2012 and was the Munich runner-up in 2013.
