RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 9 (UPI) — “Dreams DO come true,” is what Simone Biles tweeted immediately after leaving the mats Tuesday in Rio de Janeiro.
Biles and American teammates Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Maddie Kocian, and Laurie Hernandez dominated its competition, scoring 184.897 points. That mark was more than eight points better than second-place Russia. The Chinese placed third.
Raisman and Douglas are now the only American women to win three Olympic gold medals.
The group is named the ‘Final Five’ because 2016 is the last year countries can take five team members. In 2020 teams can only take four members to the Olympics. The current team is also coach Martha Karolyi’s fifth and final Olympic team before she retires.
Team USA placed first in uneven bars, vault, balance beam, and floor exercise. The 8.209 point margin is the largest margin of victory in the history of the Olympic scoring system.
