WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, May 30, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 15-year-old boy is being treated for one or more gunshot wounds after a shooting West Valley City Police officers believe was gang related.

The incident happened late Tuesday afternoon in the area of 3800 South and 1900 West. One witness told Gephardt Daily that a Hispanic male in a white Escalade, wearing a white bandana, fired at the youth, who clutched his abdomen and seemed surprised he had been hit.

Fire officials who arrived at the scene gave initial treatment to the teen, then transported him to an area hospital, West Valley City Police Lt. Blair Barfuss said.

“He was conscious, breathing and alert, and he was speaking to us,” Barfuss said, declining to categorize the victim’s condition.

“We have multiple eyewitnesses in the area that observed an altercation between two groups of people. We believe it is gang related. Approximately four shots were fired.”

Barfuss said at about 5:30 p.m. that investigators remained on the scene, and officers were following up with witness interviews and leads, “… so we can find out who did this and hold them accountable.”
