HONOLULU, Hawaii , Jan. 19, 2020 (Gephardt Daily) — Two Honolulu police officers were killed and a third wounded in a shooting near Diamond Head State Park Sunday.

According to Hawaii News Now, the officers were shot while responding to reports of a stabbing at a home on nearby Hibiscus Drive.

Preliminary reports say the stabbing took place when a 69-year-old man attacked his landlord as she attempted to enforce an eviction notice.

Two officers, one of them female, responded to the call and were reportedly shot inside the home.

The mortally wounded officers were rushed to Queen’s Medical Center in extremely critical condition and died a short while later.

A third officer was shot in the leg, but the extent of his injuries, as well as those of the landlord, remain unclear.

The gunman is believed to have set fire to the home, which then spread to at least four neighboring residences. Several vehicles also caught fire, one of which belonged to the Honolulu Police Department.

The gunman is believed to have died in the initial house fire, although police have yet to confirm his fate.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell expressed his condolences on social media.

“This is an unprecedented tragedy for not only the City and County of Honolulu but the entire state of Hawaii. I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the two officers as well as the entire Honolulu Police Department,” Caldwell wrote.

Police sources told Hawaii News Now the suspect is well known to law enforcement for making violent threats and fake emergency calls to 911.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
